The Pictured Rocks in Northern Micihigan live up to their name in more ways than one. Karyn and I decided to take an extended weekend trip in early June to hike for a few days and discover this beautiful area on our own. We left Chicago early on Wednesday morning, and drove almost eight hours to Munising Michigan. After picking up our backcountry permit at the Forest Service Ranger Station, we drove to the Chapel Beach trailhead and changed into trail gear.

Saddling our packs, the walk into Chapel Beach was easy and relaxing, over a flat trail through the forest. We quickly lost count of the chipmunks and squirrels chattering along the trail, and remarked how lush and green the trail was. Along the way, we stooped briefly at Chapel Falls, a pretty cascade falling 75 feet into Chapel Creek. After the falls, the trail narrowed, and before we knew it, we had arrived at our destination for the night.

The campsite at Chapel Beach consists of seven large areas spread out along the bluff. Chapel Creek runs behind the sites, and down to Lake Superior, providing a clear, fresh source of drinking water. (We made sure to filter the water to elimate traces of giardia and other pesky critters before drinking.) Surprisingly, there were no other campers at the site. We pitched our tent and wandered about before cooking dinner and turning in for the night.
