In the fall of 1998, I was priveleged to hike the magnificent walls and valleys of Yosemite. With friends Andrew Brown, George and Lori Goble and Steve LaGreca, I hiked and camped for eight days in Yosemite Valley.

Driving into the valley from Reno across Tioga Pass, we encountered an early season snowstorm that left inches of snow at higher elevations. We spent the first day acclimatizing to the mountain air by hiking out of Yosemite Valley to the top of Yosemite Falls.

We abandoned our plan to hike from Tuolumne Meadows to Vogelsang Pass into the Merced River Gorge for a plan that kept us at lower elevations to avoid snow. Leaving both cars at Glacier Point we hiked to Little Yosemite Valley the first night, and then up the Merced River.

Early morning mist rises revealing El Capitan, from the Valley floor.
