The Chessmen

Behind the Harney/Elkhorn ridge lies the Upper Pine Creek wilderness area. Pine Creek itself falls southeastward from the ridge in three main drainages, through many delightful canyons and rock formations. Hard to get to, the area is rarely frequented by tourists and provides the avid scrambler with many adventures. Our friends, Al and Jean Grimm have hiked most of the drainage routes, and shared much of their knowlege with us on many a day trip.

This view looks southeast from a rampart close to Mt. Dallymore, a blocky massif that closely resembles Mt. Rushmore from the back. Mt. Rushmore can be seen far off in the distance in the center of the picture. Dallymore is the rock just visible to the left, and lies northwest of the Chessmen.
