The Chessmen

A lawn-like gully is the key to climbing Little Devil's Tower, near the Cathedral Spires. The view of Harney Peak is magnificent, and the walk is only about a mile and a half. Access is from the Cathedral Spires trailhead, on the Needles Highway, roughly 3/4 of a mile from the Sylvan Lake entrance.

Some of the best places to hike in the Black Hills involve a bit of scrambling--nothing fancy, mind you. Just a bit of hand over hand, or crawling up a bit of a crack. There are a lot of hikes that are perfectly safe for youngsters... in fact, most kids love to climb around on the rocks. Just watch them closely so they don't go pitching over the abyss during lunch, while you are enjoying a sandwich and the view, and they are impatiently waiting to continue exploring.
